About Us
Robatayaki literally means fireside-cooking in Japanese. It is often shortened to just
Robata. It refers to a Japanese cooking style where premium pieces of fresh seafood or
vegetables are slow-grilled to perfection on smoking charcoal.
Robatayaki originates from a centuries-old country style of cooking by Northern
Japanese fishermen in Hokkaido around a communal hearth (irori) that served both as
a cooking area and a source of heat. The fishermen needed a way to cook on the boats,
so they encased Binchō-tan coals in a stone box to protect the boat from the intense
heat. After a government campaign depicting Hokkaido as an idyllic rustic area, this
style of cooking became popular all over Japan.

Have a drink at the bar. An izakaya 居酒屋 is a type of informal gastropub. Izakayas are
casual places for after work drinking in Japan. Robataya serve a wide variety of
alcoholic beverages including draft beer, sake, sochu, wine, whisky and cocktails. Many
food items on its menu are designed to be shared. The taste of its dishes is also more
robust in order to pair with the alcoholic drinks.
